Now for the news around here.
My office sits in the front of our home and looks out on the street. I rarely work in there because the real view is out the back. We overlook the 16th hole of a golf course and just on the other side of the fairway is a brook running through a huge line of trees. But this week was different because I am needing to use the MacBook to finish up some design work.
The other day I heard a a clicking noise coming from the window next to me. I looked up to see a young yellow finch perched on the window and cocking his head at me. It was similar to a dog when you speak to them. I just chalked it up to the possibility of him seeing his reflection in the glass. But he wouldn’t stop. He would lightly peck the glass until I looked over and then he would stop to look at me.
This went on two days in a row. So I finally got up slowly from my chair and walked over to the window. He watched intently but didn’t move or seem frightened. He definitely wasn’t being aggressive like he was defending his nest. I crouched down to his level and tapped the glass. He tapped back and cocked his head. I talked to him for a few minutes and he hopped back and forth onto the bush. Just as I started to work again he started tapping harder. He didn’t stop until I walked over again.
He has been back everyday this week. It is as if he was saying good morning and checking in. I noticed he has been spending a lot of time on my porch chairs leaving presents for me to clean up. I think he must have a nest close by. But for now I like to think he is just being neighborly. I enjoy drinking my coffee in the morning and watching him. I hope he decides to stay all summer. Life is good.
