Pierogi And Sausage Crock Pot
I married into a Polish family many years ago. In that time they have learned to love my Italian food but I am still trying to master their Polish.
I botched cabbage rolls in the first few weeks I was married. I couldn’t get them to stay together as nice as I had seen so I used tooth picks under them and forgot to tell anyone.
And I had many unanswered questions!
Do you cook the rice before hand?
How do you core a cabbage?
Do you cook the cabbage first?
What brand tomato juice do you need?
I am sure you get the idea. And I have NEVER tried them since.
I find sausage easy, and pierogi easier to understand.
These are the INGREDIENTS You will need:
- 16 oz package of Polska Kielbasa/Polish Sausage sliced (I used the turkey version)
- 1 1/2 peppers sliced (I used 1/2 each of red, green and yellow peppers)
- 1 small onion sliced
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2 Tbsp butter
- bay leaf optional, but adds great flavor
- salt and pepper
- 16 oz package of frozen pierogi
These are the INSTRUCTIONS for preparation:
- Place all ingredients EXCEPT pierogi into Crockpot.
- Cook on low appx 6-7 hours. 45 minutes before you’re ready to eat, add the frozen pierogi and turn crockpot to high.
- If you like some of your pierogies to be browned, spray the exposed parts of your crockpot with cooking spray or brush with butter. Those pieces should brown nicely.
After all. Aren’t the pierogi just like little hand pies? I have made those before. Many times.
And Polish sausage has to be as easy as Italian Sausage, right?
I quickly found out that I really could cook a Polish dinner my husband would recognise.
I dissected the frozen pierogi so it would be easier to make them. And they seemed easy to figure out.
I took no chances though in trying my hand at improvisation. I learned my lesson.
Later I tried making Potato Cheese Pierogi from scratch.
Even though I used frozen, my husband was just happy knowing I was willing to try to make a boyhood favorite.
He asked me to try my hand at City Chicken next.
Anyone want to tell me if that would be boneless skinless?
I have some great tips on getting the most from your crock pot at How Not To Make The Worst Crock Pot Meal Ever.

I made this recipe a few weeks ago and wrote about it (and posted a picture of my results) on Little Cottage Link Party #79 today. I hope you can drop by and see.
I am so glad you made this Kristie! I will definitely check it out. And I would never miss a party. Enjoy a safe and wonderful week!
Hi Marilyn!
How fun that you married into a Polish family. My husband is Ukrainian and the Ukrainian/Russian cuisine has a lot of similar foods to the Polish.
We also make pierogies, but we saute onion and bacon and then cook the pierogies in that. And finally, dip them in sour cream of course! The sauteed onion and bacon tastes amazing on the pierogies. However, I love pierogies ANY way!
The cabbage rolls I actually found to be fairly easy, but it could have just been the way I was taught though, haha!
Thanks for linking up and sharing with us on the Embracing Home and Family link up party!

Those pierogi sound delicious. We use many fillings such as fruits, prune, kraut, potato, and more. I like putting sour cream on top or farmers cheese inside. My Irish and Italian background is so very different than the Polish. I have as much fun as you. Do creating these new (to me) recipes. Thanks for commenting!
Yum, I gave this recipe a 5-star rating! Delicious comfort food.

We only tried Pierogi for the first time this year and we love them in this house
I love them. You can put almost anything inside them! Have a great day!
I have the exact same story as you. I married into a polish family 35+ years ago and my homemade pierogies fell apart and my husbands aunt lost patience with me and I never did learn how to make them. Can’t wait to try your recipe and I like the hint of putting the pierogies on the side of the crockpot to brown them.
It is tough to follow a great Polish grandma isn’t it? I am still learning, but these were good! Thanks Cathy for your story. Enjoy your week.
I served pierogies last week for the first time in a very long while. I was heralded as a dinner hero. They were just the boxed Mrs. T’s kind sautéed in butter. I could not believe the reaction. I’m sure your recipe is a crowd favorite.
Thanks Joey. I must confess, unles the kids are here to help, i use frozen too. They never notice the difference!! Have a lovely week.
