Now for the news around here.
This has been a week of COVID19 vaccines for my family. Since we took the 2 hour trip, we have been contacted no less than 3 times informing us that our application had come up for appointment. Of course all within a half hour from home.
My dentist was saying he was going to our local Walgreens. Jim got online Tuesday and was successful getting my son and his wife a shot that day! They both have just recently qualified.
My oldest son then jumped on and got an appointment for Thursday.
And as providence would have it, my son was the last appointment. He overheard the pharmacist saying they had 3 does that if went unused would need to be disposed of in the next hour.
I immediately thought of my best friend that had been trying for many weeks to get a shot. She is the wife of our friend that passed away in November. I am so glad she was able to take the shot and it wasn’t wasted.
As I wrote last week, my husband, his mom and I went and received our own shots on Saturday.
All went as expected with mom. I used all the tricks I had planned to get her in the. I even had to threaten we were going to pick her up and put her in the car. With or without her underwear. But once in the car she had a wonderful time. It is the first time in 45 years we got to spend the day with her one on one. And it will be a memory that will make me smile for a lifetime.
She loved the ride, the wind turbines she called windmills, and enjoyed a large lunch.
Once Jim explained about the turbines she wanted to know how she was getting electricity and when she could get her own windmill. What a character she is.
She got dropped off at her home around 4:00. Jim called his brother that lives down the street from her and said she was home. Tom then called Jim’s sister too.
They all stopped by and she was chatty, and happy and exhausted. She went to bed.
Jim called her in the morning and again she was even better than always.
When his sister, her husband and his brother showed up for a visit, mom was acting goofy. She was chatting one minute and then staring like she didn’t understand what anyone was saying the next.
We called her Dr and took her to the ER. Just in that trip she declined. We thought she may have become dehydrated as she never drinks water. Or maybe it was the shot. The Dr emphatically said neither was the cause and he suspected a stroke.
After many tests and much drama from the staff and therapists it was determined she had a severe stroke with evidence of at least 6-8 smaller ones. This had been coming on for a long time.
Jim’s sister and husband have experienced recently this entire ordeal with both of his parents. So he was able to navigate the medical mess. I had worked 7 years of paying medical claims and I helped with that piece.
Mom was taken yesterday to a facility. We are now just like the news clips. Standing outside her window and trying to visit. She keeps putting on her coat and hat while waiting in her chair. When she sees one of us she tries to get to the exit but is brought back by nurses to her room.
This is tough on everyone. I worry since sometimes she can answer easy questions and other she can’t even talk. It is hard watching the others trying to get used to the idea she won’t be coming home anytime soon.
None of us are able to take her in due to our own poor health, working full time, or only an upstairs room that can be used as a private bedroom. This whole thing brutal.
Again, I find myself pondering the thousands of other families suffering these things. And Covid restrictions, although necessary, make it harder. Mom gets 1 visitor a week, by appointment. But only if the facility has been covid free for 14 days, and the visitor brings a negative test no more than 3 days old.
I hope none of you are having family members that need such serious care. I ask you all to know you are never alone. Many out there are thinking about you. We will get past this. And life will get better.
Stay safe and stay positive.
I think of you all everyday and worry went you don’t come around. So let me know when you are here.
