Now for the news around here.
Now for the news from the Home of Excitement!
I hope this true tale brings a small smile to your face and gives you a moment of escape from the weather that has smitten the USA, especially the south.
Last night we were sitting around the dining room table playing our nightly games. My husband was reading in his chair.
All of a sudden a chirping sound came from the stairs above us. It only could mean one thing. Smoke Alarm.
Just as my husband was saying he changed all the batteries at daylight saving time a LOUD squealing, shrieking noise started up.
Every one of the 11 alarms were going off at once.
My son and husband each grabbed a step ladder and ran around pressing the little reset button to no avail.
Miss Jo has always been scared to death of fires. She grabbed her favorite stuffed animal and hyperventilated on the couch as the boys went from room to room trying to end the noise.
She was beside herself wondering why her mom and I sat calmly.
We tried to tell her it was a malfunction but it didn’t stop her panic.
My son was removing batteries and my husband went to the breaker box and flipped the switches.
Nothing stopped the noise. They were screaming even without a battery in some areas.
This lasted for over 15 solid minutes. And then whatever they had done finally worked and it was silent.
Jovie was still trembling and we tried to tell her the event was a good thing. Now she knew the sound to listen for. And now she knew she would never sleep through the cacophony.
She was very upset saying that “they looked for fire in every room, but not the attic opening in her closet.”
We had a hard time convincing her that there was no fire.
After her mom told her how to calm yourself and not panic and why it was important to keep a level head she was sent to bed.
Miss J just looked at her mom and said, “You just told me all that and now you want me to go to sleep?”
After about 20-30 minutes the noise started again! The kids were downstairs watching a movie when Miss J came flying from her room. She asked where her parents were and that someone needed to get them out of the house!
I was able to look her in the eye and reassure her again nothing bad was happening.
After her mom came upstairs Miss J explained how she handled this new disaster. (Her words).
She said she was trying to breathe deeply and then grabbed her stuffies to save them when she decided to leave them behind. (WOW). She explained she needed both hands to descend the ladder from her loft.
She crawled on the floor to her door and felt it for heat as well as the doorknob. Once she was sure it was safe to open the door she came down the stairs.
She was still wide eyed when she asked her mom where the meeting place was. She couldn’t remember if it was the tree in front of the house or the row of mailboxes. (They are 6 feet apart.)
After some snuggles from each of us we convinced her it was safe. And I said I wasn’t going to bed until it was certain the noise wouldn’t happen again.
I am so proud of her on how she overcame her panic and put all her fire training into action.
I thought things were over until about 4 am today. It all started again! This time we just put fresh batteries in the smoke detectors again. They are 15 years old. We are discussing next steps to have them replaced and the electric checked out or leave just them alone until the next disaster.
And that better NOT be any time soon!!
We all said a prayer thanking that nothing worse had happened. And then we said prayers for everyone else going through so much devastation.
Please All stay safe. Stay warm. And know we are all trying to find a way to help you.
Hugz.

Doggone it!! I missed the party! It’s been a wild week. We’re still cleaning up debris from the storm damage. I’ll try to make to the party this week!! Thanks for hosting. Have a great week end Marilyn.
I am so glad you came by Helen. I know you have a wild schedule, but when you don’t show I get worried. I almost emailed you! I will see you next week. Sorry about so much mess to handle. Hugz
Hey Marilyn, I’m at 153, 154, 155 this week. Poor Miss Jo! I hope she can get over this scary experience!
I am sure she will. These panic attacks are new. I hope they go away soon. Too many tales from friends I guess. They are at the scare everyone age. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Marilyn,
I can’t remember if I commented and mentioned the number of my ink ups for this week….a Senior Moment!!
# 141 and 142!! Thanks for hosting and visiting!!
Hugs,
Deb
I always have those senior moments!! If you didn’t then I have them now. See? I can’t remember either. LOL. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Hello Marilyn! There is nothing worse than a stinking fire alarm malfunction, but all of them at once! Oh boy! It wonderful that her training came right back to her and she was able to maintain herself to get downstairs. I’m sharing at #146 this week where I’m showing how to make these adorable jute twine carrots for Spring decorating. Have a great day! 🙂
She can tend to have panic attacks as she gets older. It was a great chance for her to learn to calm herself. I remember the last time was when we took away a pacifier. it didn’t take long then either to teach her to calm herself. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Hi, Marilyn; I hope you have managed to correct the glitch for good, it must have been so stressful to have so many incidents. Thank you for hosting another great party; I am sharing #140 Wafer Chocolate Bars- Tin Larin Style. Enjoy your week!
I sure hope we have Irene. But getting them replaces is definitly a high priority! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Those little detectors make a racket. Ours kept going off, nothing worked. We need to purchase two new ones.
Glad everything turned out fine at your home. It was a good for J to hear what they really sound like.
My spots are #133 and #134
Yes Rachelle. After it was all done it was a good learning experience. I hope she doesn’t need to use it! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Thanks so much for the feature! I so appreciate it!
You are welcome Amy. Congrats again! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Yikes with the smoke alarm chaos! I’ve had one continue to go off one night – and of course my husband was traveling and my kids were jumping out of bed frantic. Battery replaced, everyone back asleep – it happened again! (eventually we figured it out) Thanks for the linkup – Jen #30 and #131 this week
Sorry to hear the smoke alarm story! that is so unnerving. you are welcome for the party! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Hope you get your smoke alarm situation rectified soon. That sound is unnerving for the best of us let alone a child. Linking up this week at 92 & 93. Have a good week!
Thank you Marie. So far so good. We will be replacing them before they decide to deafen us all! Thanks for sharing and try to stay warm!
Hi Marilyn, I am #82 sharing a trip to NYC. Thanks for hosting and enjoy the week.
You are welcome Julie! I love touring other cities. I have never been to NYC so this should be fun! Thanks for sharing and try to stay warm!
Thanks for another wonderful party and I hope you had a great weekend.
You are welcome Chas! Enjoy your week and stay safe!
Hi Marilyn, thank you for featuring my Fat Tuesday table! So sorry about your smoke detectors, scary and frustrating! Thank you for hosting, my links are #70, 71, 72
You are welcome Jenna. Congrats again! I love the colors of Mardi Gras so it wasn’t a hard to choice to find your beautiful table one I kept coming back to. Thanks for sharing again this week and be safe!
Thank you for hosting the party. We appreciate you. Our links this week are: #48, #51, & #52. That is a crazy story about your smoke detectors – that is a bit frustrating that nobody could figure out why it was happening. See you next week.
I am not good at helping with gadgets, so, unlike my usual self I sat and was quiet. LOL. Thanks for sharing again this week and be safe!
#47 I remember a similar experience when I lived in the US. Here in the Netherlands smoke detectors are not common place. It is not the law to have them installed and if you feel the need to have one (Yes, I do!) you have to buy one yourself – your landlord does not legally have to provide one for you.
I always am surprised when countries have such different practices. We also used to have a CO2 monitor, but that never shut up! Thanks for sharing again this week and be safe!
Hi Marilyn
I am #45 this week–restaurants we enjoyed in New Orleans
I read that smoke alarms do not last longer than 10 years so it sounds like you should replace all of yours! Bette safe than sorry. I’m glad your granddaughter learned how to respond the right way to a possible fire –what a way to practice! She won;t forget this experience any time soon. Hope all will be well from now on.
Pat
I do believe we will change them out, Pat. You are right. It is a lesson she will remember forever. Thanks for sharing again this week and be safe!
Sounds like some excitement there! haha. Good thing she remembered her training even with all the fear. Thanks also for hosting every week and featuring my bacon wrapped dates this week. I brought by some Nutty Asian Chicken Strips. Hope you enjoy!
I think Miss Jo brought it all into focus with her thoughts and reactions. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Ugh – those smoke detectors. Our batteries always seem to die out in the middle of the night and we can never figure out which one the beep is coming from! Thanks for hosting and enjoy your week. I’m numbers 36, 37 and 38 this week.
Shelley
I share the middle of the night anguish. I thought it was just my dumb luck! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Hi Marilyn, We recently had a similar thing happen with our smoke alarms. It about drove my husband crazy disconnecting them all and then replacing all the batteries! I brought my Hibachi Style Chicken to the party this week, I’m #34.
~Leslie
I can just see a zoom, where 25 families are all running around after smoke alarms to some sort of song. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
I hate when our smoke detectors malfunction… that noise drives me crazy! We have replaced all our smoke detectors at least twice now since we moved in 17 years ago. Usually when one of them starts beeping and we can’t seem to make it stop no matter what we do. Linking up as # 32 &33 this week.
I think we are on that path. For the last few days they have been quiet. But better prepared than listen to that noise! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
I’m so pleased that my post, Create a Welcoming Home, was liked by the particpants at last week’s party – you made my day!
you are welcome Carol. Congrats again! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Wow that was some excitement. I think it would be unnerving to say the least!
I am #’s 17 & 18 – Happenings on the Homestead #105 and Oven Baked Honey Ginger Wings
Have a great week!
Melissa | Little Frugal Homestead
I think the noise was the worst part. I hope it is finally over! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Sorry about your fire alarm debacle!
I am at 6 and 11 this week.
Thanks Michele. It all seems humorous now. So many more have it so bad right now. A bit of humor is the best I can give. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!
Thanks so much for hosting! I’m linking up with the first to be featured in my new series OUTSTANDING BLOGGER AWARD – SHELBEE ON THE EDGE.
