Now for the news around here.
The second semester of school started this last week for our district.
I have always found it strange that after the long Christmas break the kids still have the same classes and teachers. Well, for Middle and High School.
Then at the end of January subjects as well as teachers have changed.
Some of the kids carried the same subjects but with different teachers.
Seeing where each student was in learning and getting them all caught up in their new classrooms was interesting.
With the switch came new routines. Some students were learning a lesson again. And some were catching up.
For the 6th graders here that also means 2 classes have ended and 2 new ones started.
Miss Jo now is taking STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). And Leadership.
I don’t care what I read on the internet. Kids these days ARE getting a well rounded education with subjects to help them become good citizens and excellent workers. No matter what they choose as a career.
I know that I am hard pressed to keep up with the questions she asks.
And I was a 4.0 student both High School and College.
What she is learning these days I learned in the School of Hard Knocks and Survival.
With the addition of the internet, educational TV and ability to make friends of all cultures totally changes
the way we learned in the 60’s and 70’s. And what was necessary to learn. Our current events is their history.
As I look back at how education was for my mom and dad I see how much my own education had changed.
And my sons in the 80’s and 90’s had many more ways to learn as well as lessons.
When I hear “in my day” stories 2 things come to mind.
We need to stop thinking all learning should happen in a classroom. Parents need to fill in the pieces that school doesn’t teach. We need to spend more quality time with our children to do that. How can they learn from our example if we don’t bring them on our journey?
And some things we learned have been replaced by lessons of a new society.
I feel confident that the next generations will take care of this Earth and way of life as we know it far better than we did. The world changes so fast.
When I heard Miss Jo talking in study rooms with classmates. I walked away in awe.
I will end this op-ed by saying each parent, child, school system and way of life are different. And there is no one correct answer. That is what makes life interesting.
We need to be open minded to new ideas.
Tell me how thing are in your little part of the world. I would love to know!!
