Now for the news around here.
I was going to write a bit about the “mean” girls today hoping to share how even young children can feel so hopeless they can harbor thoughts or acts of suicide. My granddaughter is in the 5th grade and what started as cliques of girls being mean, has turned into all out bullying. Severe bullying. And it made me see how the depression in young children is very real. It isn;t just a phase they need to get past. I see in this empathetic child a heart that is bursting as she can;t understand why she was chosen for this burden. She has spent hours retreating into her room. I thought she was reading her favorite books. I missed the signs. But she is so resilient. This is a girl that spends her recess playing with the child with spina bifida when no one else pays attention. To join an elderly person sitting alone in a restaurant to color them a picture for their fridge and carry on a conversation. The child that shares EVERYTHING with another child before thinking of herself. Who always finds something kind to say even though another is speaking hurtful to her. It breaks my heart to see her pain and depression and there is not much I can say or do to help her through it. I have found myself muttering the serenity prayer all day as I go through my routines. When I told her saying the prayer helps to get rid of my anger me she smiled. She went on to share when she becomes “invisible” to them she just says her silence doesn’t mean she wants to strike back. (Yes, she said that). She recites this in her head and smiles. Psalm 28:7. The LORD is my strength and my shield, my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. How perfect is that? What a kid. I wish the world could take a lesson from this 10 year old. I know I did.
