Homemade Beef Stew Seasoning Mix

Homemade Beef Stew Seasoning Mix

I scored some flank steaks at the grocery today and grabbed a few pounds to make some Crock Pot Beef Stew.

I got up early knowing it would take me a while to get everything chopped up. My arthritis has been bad this week. And the family doesn’t trust me with a knife anyway. My neuropathy makes it dangerous.

So I get everything together and in the crock pot.as I was looking for my seasoning I discovered it was gone!!

I don’t remember using it up. But then again I don’t realize at times I never put my glasses on. (True story).

So I had to look around for a good recipe. I have been meaning to switch my Beef Stew Seasoning Mix over to homemade anyway.

These are the INGREDIENTS You will need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 tsp oregano
  • 2 tbs basil
  • 4.25 tbs salt
  • 4.25 tbs black pepper
  • 4.25 tbs onion powder
  • 4.25 tbs garlic powder
  • 4.25 tbs paprika
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbs celery seeds
  • 2 tsp rosemary

These are the INSTRUCTIONS for preparation:

  • Measure all ingredients into a large ziploc bag, shake well.
  • Store in a jar. Use a tight lid.
  • To use: add 2-3 T. per 2lbs of Meat.

NOTES

Nutrition Information is for entire recipe.

I found this one from food.com. I was skeptical about some of those herbs in the stew but Food.com knows better than I do!

Now, I must confess. I am not much of a “measurer”. I can never find the spoons. The cups are always behind my kids favorite glasses. And I already broke the one my son got from his trip to Ireland.

I want to warn you that some of these ingredients may have been less or more than the directions called for.

But it looked the same color as the image with the recipe so I just used it.

And the flour being in the seasoning helped to thicken the stew even better than when I add it at the end and try to get the lumps out.

I also may have added too much of the mix too. I didn’t read the instructions on that either.

So don’t do what I do. Read the directions and follow them.

But through no fault of mine, the stew was excellent!!

I didn’t bother to tell anyone the seasonings were not the same as I always used.

I didn’t hear any complains though. So I feel I can give this Beef Stew Seasoning Mix a big thumbs up!

Let me know if you use it and how it turns out for you.

And since you control the spices it can be perfect for whatever dietary restrictions you may need to follow.

I love baking and cooking with a fresh package of brown sugar. It smells so good. I also love packing it tightly into a measuring cup when I use it in a recipe. The satisfaction I get when it flips out, perfectly molded, like sand for a sand castle always makes me smile.
Homemade Brown Sugar
Brown sugar is an integral part of baking and cooking. Most home cooks keep an ample amount of both dark and light brown sugar.

Mr rough calculations are it is 27 Tbs 1 tsp of spices. Which is slightly more than 1.5 cups. The flour being 2 cups that would translate to seven half cups. According to my calculations it would take 1 Tbs plus 1 tsp of mix for 2lbs meat based on using 3 Tbs with flour. Hope that helps!

Well, Sister by Another Mother, we share arthritis, too! I am gonna try this recipe, leaving out the flour; I will use cornstarch at the last minute as I don’t know the proportions! My late Irish mother-in-law always used Worchestershire sauce in her beef stew and it was good! And I joined your blog instead of finding you just on parties!

First off I want to apologize for not returning your email. I save it until it was quiet here. Nobody told me if you archive an email in Gmail that when you empty trash, so does the archive Files. I like the idea of using corn meal to thicken over flour. I find at times I get a better gravy when I do. Depends on the recipe. I need to try Worcestershire sauce. I have seen that being used and I bet it really spices up the stew! Thanks for subscribing to the blog. I look forward to more of your ideas! Have a safe and healthy weekend. Happy Father’s Day to Al.
