Easter Egg Bread Ring
Easter 2014 was extra special for our family.
Not only was it my turn to cook, but we had a larger crowd than normal.
My granddaughter has chose that Easterto be baptized.
That meant an extra special menu.
And themed before and after dinner finger foods to last the day.
I am certain people were coming when they could and leaving as they must.
A menu I can prepared over two days was important.
Fitting the refrigerated foods into my ice box was key.
That meant taking my stock down to almost nothing to prepare for the day.
These are the INGREDIENTS you will need:
- 4 1/2 to 5 cups Pillsbury BEST® All Purpose Flourdivided
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 2 1/4 oz. packages quick-rising dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoons milk divided
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/3 stick Crisco® Baking Sticks Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
- OR 1/3 cup Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
- 3 large eggs divided
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup chopped nuts or 1/2 cup golden raisins optional
- Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
- 6 hard-cooked large eggs shells dyed in a variety of colors, using Easter Egg kit
- 1/3 cup Pillsbury® Creamy Supreme® Vanilla Flavored Frosting optional
- 2 to 3 teaspoons lemon juice or water optional
These are the INSTRUCTIONS for preparation:
- STIR 2 cups flour, sugar, yeast, lemon peel, cinnamon and salt in large bowl. Microwave 3/4 cup milk, water and shortening in microwave-safe bowl on HIGH 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until very warm (120° to 130°F). (Shortening will not melt completely.) Gradually beat into flour mixture, using electric mixer on low speed. Add 2 eggs and vanilla. Beat an additional 2 minutes. Stir in just enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Knead in nuts or raisins, if desired. Loosely cover with plastic wrap coated with cooking spray. Let rest 10 minutes.
- COAT baking sheet with cooking spray. Divide dough in half. Roll each piece into a 30-inch rope on a lightly floured surface. Loosely twist the ropes together; transfer dough to prepared baking sheet, pinching ends together to create a circular ring. Coat the outside of a custard cup with cooking spray. Invert and place in center of ring to maintain circular hole in center during baking. Gently separate dough ropes in 6 areas to create spaces for dyed eggs. Arrange dyed eggs on dough and gently press down. Coat ring lightly with cooking spray. Loosely cover with plastic wrap. Let rise in warm place until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
- HEAT oven to 350°F. Whisk remaining egg and 1 tablespoon milk until frothy. Brush bread dough with egg mixture. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from baking sheet and cool until slightly warm on wire rack. Lift bread to remove custard cup.
To make optional glaze:
- COMBINE frosting and 2 teaspoons lemon juice or water in small bowl until smooth, adding additional juice or water to reach desired consistency. Drizzle over bread. Best served same day.
NOTES:
IMPORTANT TIP:According to the Center For Disease Control DO NOT consume hard-cooked eggs that have been left unrefrigerated for more than 2 hours. This is especially important for anyone with a compromised immune system, young child or elderly.
I chose this bread to make since it is definitely Easter themed. And it performed a double duty of centerpiece and appetizer.
And it didn’t overshadow the celebration!
I hope you like it and give it a try!
What are you doing for the Holiday meal this year?

Thanks Clearissa. She picked her own baptism. She just went to the pastor and said she was ready. He tested her and said it was time. I am so proud of her. She is stubborn (and opinionated) just like her grandma. LOL. The ring made a great centerpiece. Have a great week!
Hope you had a wonderful weekend and thanks so much for sharing your special post with us at Full Plate Thursday! Have a great week and come back soon!

I had to look that one up Jim. Looks delicious! Enjoy your week.
This bread looks perfect for Easter, I love bread made with yeast! Thank you for bringing your recipe to #CookBlogShare!
You are welcome Monika. Enjoy your week.
This looks so pretty for the Easter table. Do you eat the eggs separately or are they just to make it pretty?
Yes, you can eat the eggs separately. It is best to add them just before you present the bread. Just don;t leave them out longer than 2 hours. Hard boiled eggs after that point start to become prone to bacteria and should be chilled again. Enjoy!
This is so pretty and would be a stunner on the Easter table!
I just love a pretty edible centerpiece. Thank you Barrie and have a great week!
Oh yummy! I love baking bread and this is such a fun twist! #CookBlogShare

Can you delete my last comment? I’m not sure what went wrong but, I noticed it didn’t take the comment & it pulled an address. I have never encountered that. My computer has been wonky lately. I pinned & shared your lovely recipe. Thanks for sharing at the Inspiration Spotlight party.
Thank you Theresa for commenting. This autofill bug show up in any url with https. I flipped my site and it seems blogs are part of it also. I try to catch comments as this is scary!
I love making homemade bread! There’s something therapeutic about kneading it and the smell is always so wonderful!
This one Roseann is the best! It makes the best edible centerpiece!
Just the thought of working with yeast leaves me shaking in my boots. This bread is so pretty and festive that I’m going to have to get over that phobia real quick. This looks so delicious and I want to try it.
You can use your regular breadmaking recipe and then add the additional spices. Add your easter eggs and you have an edible centerpiece. Have a great day!
I’ve always wanted to try to make one of these – Oh my oh my oh my – I want this!! Had to pin this dish! Thanks for sharing on the What’s for Dinner link up!
You are welcome Helen. You have an edible centerpiece!! have a wonderful week!
How fun. I have seen these before, but I didn’t know that you could bake the eggs into the bread like that! Are the eggs edible after that? Thanks so much for sharing at Celebrate Your Story!
They sure are. You just need to peel them! Have a great week Chloe!
Very festive for your special family Easter/Baptism celebration! My family is still up in the air (as usual) as to who is doing what, so it is hard to plan if it turns out that the festivities will be hosted at my house and if it is . . . I’ll be scrambling as per usual! Pinning to save your recipe! Thanks so much for stopping in and sharing with us this week at Brag About It! Have a great week Marilyn!
You are always so gracious Laurie. I am sure your celebration will be fun and special.
What a cute idea! 🙂
Thanks for joining Cooking and Crafting with J & J!

How adorable is this?!! Making homemade bread is so much fun, but I’ve never seen dyed eggs incorporated into it. It’s so colorful and festive. 🙂
This is my favorite! Have a great week!

Gorgeous Bread! Thanks for bringing this by Throwback Thursday!
Mollie
You are welcome Mollie! See you next week!
What a fantastic and original idea! We don’t cook our own bread (it’s something I really need to try) but I love this Easter Twist!!
Thanks Charlotte. I wish it was original. I first saw it from my Eastern European grandmother. It took me orever to braid it so it looked nice! Bread is fairly easy. You need to try it. Nothing like fresh homemade warm bread! Happy Easter.
My grandmother always made Easter bread with hard boiled eggs in it too. Was a favorite of ours with sweet creamy butter on top. Baptized on Easter – how delightful is that. Happy Easter to you and your loved ones. Blessings my sweet friend.
Bread, even more so than sweets, is my Downfall. Nothing to my family is better than warm homemade bread. We use REAL butter, or olive oil with toasted garlic to dip in. Due to my granddaughters diet restrictions I make most of our bread. You can come into my kitchennd see bread pans with rising bread in them all the time. How wonderful to be baptised on Easter! I know Miss J is so excited! Have a wonderful Easter.
marilyn you have outdone yourself this looks like fun will have to show my son conor he’s my bread maker(all my boys cook) will have to try. Our usual holiday bread is pumpkin hoping to try a new Joann Fluke Applesauce Bread might be on next weeks party
Thank you Lorraine for the kind words. The hardest part was the braid. My first try looked like a 4 year old learning to tie their shoes! I never did an applesauce bread! Gotta try it!
I’ve never made one of these, but they look so good. Maybe this is the year I will make one.
Heidi I sure hope you do! Makes a great edible centerpiece!
Hi there! Visiting from Sunday Features. This is so pretty! I love that you incorporated the eggs!
Thanks Ashley for stopping by! I like the eggs, too. Grabs the eye with the color and you have to eat those eggs you dyed, right? Come back soon. I love Sunday Features.
Oh my Marilyn! What a beautiful bread wreath! Thank you for sharing at Snickerdoodle. I will be featuring this on Saturday! Have a great week!
Thank you for the visit and the compliment Elizabeth! I love Snickerdoodle linky!
I’ve never made Easter Egg Bread, your recipe sounds delicious with the lemon peel and raisins. I’ll have to add this to my holiday ‘must make’ list. Thank you so much for sharing with Foodie Friends Friday party this weekend.
We look forward to seeing you again soon with another delicious recipe.
A FFF co-host,
Joanne/WineLady Cooks
Thanks so much for visiting and the kind comment, Joanne! My kitchen is always open so come back soon. I would ne er miss a party at FFF.
I’ve always wanted to make this but I never got there. It’s a mental thing, I’m pretty sure. We never finish anything and tossing the bread AND the eggs out seems sinful. 🙂 Looks great.
Oh, Maureen! I just made a very small one and used up 6 eggs my granddaughter dyed. We ate them for lunch in tuna salad! But son’t tell!
