Use of these Plugins have been chosen with knowledge I have at this time. Not all plugins should be automatically used for all themes, or with wordpress.com plugins that are available on wordpress.org. (Such as Jetpack) as some plugins may cause a conflict. Investigate if the function of this plugin is already being used by another plugin, core, or your theme! I use 27 plugins which can be debated as excessive. I have made the decision to use these plugins and have weighed compatability, security, need and weight for each choice. Your needs, priorities and preferences may and will be different!
I have not been compensated nor paid for my opinion and have not received endorsement by any author.
Add Widget After Content
This plugin adds a widget area after post content before the comments. You can also tell it not to display on a specific post or post format.
Version 2.0.4 | By Arelthia Phillips
My theme does not have a widget area after the post and I didn’t want to pay to change my theme.php
Comment Reply Email Notification
Sends an email notification to the comment author when someone replies to his comment.
Version 1.1.1 |
My comment system does not notify a commenter of a reply and I want to let them know a reply was written and give them an easy way to read the reply.
The WordPress recipe plugin for non-geeks. EasyRecipe makes it easy to enter, format and print your recipes, as well as automagically doing all the geeky stuff needed for Google’s Recipe View.
Version 3.5.3208 | By EasyRecipe |
As a recipe blogger a nice recipe plugin solves a lot of issues. This one has excellent options and support. This is a premium plugin but a free option is available. The big difference is the ability to allow guest posting without adding that user to your dashboard.
EWWW Image Optimizer
Reduce file sizes for images within WordPress including NextGEN Gallery and GRAND FlAGallery. Uses jpegtran, optipng/pngout, and gifsicle.
Version 2.5.9 | By Shane Bishop |
I use iPad and it is hard to find a program to optimize images. Doing this function within your blog is not an optimal useage of space and resources but it is convenient as I don’t need to run to the library to optimize and name images.
EZ InLinkz linkup
Easily adds the InLinkz linkup code to your post instead of relying of embedded SCRIPT tags. To get the code, login normally to www.inlinkz.com and go to “get script” of the relevant collection
Version 0.17 | By Aris Korbetis, InLinkz.com |
I post a lot of parties where I don’t create the code. This plugin bypasses the use of scripts and creates a better SEO answer.
Fanciest Author Box
The only author box plugin you’ll ever need. Adds feature rich author box to your posts, can also be used as shortcode, widget or template tag. Fully customizable and translation ready.
Version 2.1 | By ThematoSoup |
This is also a premium plugin. Even though the native wordpress provides an authorbox this plugin comes with the ability to create social media tabs. The display is similar to separate widgets for social media and also eliminates the need for follow buttons.
Featured Images in RSS w/ Size and Position
Adds featured images from posts to your site’s RSS feed output, with featured image size and CSS positioning options.
Version 1.3.7 | By Press Wizards |
For some reason my theme doesn’t add my image when added to RSS feeds. I have paid twice to have this fixed but it breaks with every wordpress update. I got tired of having to pay to have this fixed.
Genesis eNews Extended
Replaces the Genesis eNews Widget to allow easier use of additional mailing services.
Version 2.0.2 | By Brandon Kraft |
This is my choice to display my mailchimp subscription. It came with my theme and looks nice so I kept it.
Genesis Responsive Slider
A responsive featured slider for the Genesis Framework.
Version 0.9.5 | By StudioPress |
This slider also came with my theme. Even thogh sliders make your page speed take a hit, I keep it to two images and it is the only animated section of my homepage.
GM Block Bots
Blocks traffic from SEMalt, buttons-for-website and others
Version 1.2.16 | By GreenMellen Media |
Suffice it to say there are good bots and bad bots and spiders running rampant in your database eating up your resources and eventually making it necessary to buy a bigger data plan. This blocks those pesty bots and saves me money all in one shot. No setup required! For more in depth detail on bots please listen to my Site Success Interview on Blog Aid.
Speed up your site by deactivation of useless scripts and styles.
Version 1.0.3 | By Tomasz Dobrzyński |
No matter what steps I took to move styles and scripts to the best place when my blog loads, nothing worked until this. It decreased my load time significantly. This is a premium plugin but if you rely on page speed to keep visitors or you run ads it is a great investment. This author is also my tech guy now.
Google Analytics by Yoast Premium
This plugin makes it simple to add Google Analytics to your WordPress site, adding lots of features, e.g. error page, search result and automatic outgoing links and download tracking.
Version 5.4.7 | By Team Yoast |
This is a premium plugin that came bundled with Yoast SEO premium. The jury is still out whether I will keep it, free or premium. Having analytics in your dashboard is nice but it isn’t necessary.
Leadin is an easy-to-use marketing automation and lead tracking plugin for WordPress that helps you better understand your web site visitors.
Version 4.5.0 | By Leadin |
This is a FREE plugin and my most favorite. It sends an email of all forms that are completed. Comment, signups, contact etc. It tells me the name and email of the person, the form, where the blogger came from on the internet and a blurb from their gravatar. It gives me the history of their visits and the posts and pages viewed. I get a weekly summary of the plugins findings. The best part is this data is NOT housed on my server. It is housed on the cloud. To see more, please read my article about Leadin.
Adds some extra security to WordPress by restricting the rate at which failed logins can be re-attempted from a given IP range. Distributed through Bad Neighborhood.
Version v1.6.1 | By Michael VanDeMar |
This is a security plugin. It limits the amount of login attempts using a bad password. Just get it.
Media File Renamer
Renames media files automatically based on their titles and updates the references.
Version 2.6.8 | By Jordy Meow |
This is a great way to rename your images as well as the URL. The best choice is to do this before you upload your image. Using iPad I don’t have a way to do this so I use this plugin.
Ninja Forms is a webform builder with unparalleled ease of use and features.
Version 2.9.33 | By The WP Ninjas |
This is a form maker that was recommended by my theme. Right now I only use it for my contact form. But it gives me choices.
Print Friendly and PDF
PrintFriendly & PDF button for your website. Optimizes your pages and brand for print, pdf, and email.
Version 3.4.5 | By Print Friendly |
Using tech sites like GT Metrix I was getting hit with the message of not having a global way for readers to print. This allows printing and a way to save my posts as pdf. What the heck, I live to get good scores on tests where I can.
Related Posts for WordPress
Related Posts for WordPress, the best way to display related posts in WordPress.
Version 1.9.1 | By Barry Kooij |
I am a believer of allowing readers an easy way to find my posts. While Related Posts plugins are resource hogs this one is a good one. I use text as opposed to images since the FREE version lists the images vertically. The paid verion fixes that. Text is smaller server use than images anyway.
Simple Social Icons
A simple, CSS and icon font driven social icons widget.
Version 1.0.13 | By Nathan Rice |
These are follow icons. They can be customized and are lightweight.
A plugin to maximize social shares and drive more traffic using the fastest and most intelligent share buttons on the market, calls to action via in-post click-to-tweets, popular posts widgets based on share popularity, link-shortening, Google Analytics and much, much more!
Version 1.4.1 | By Warfare Plugins |
This plugin combines some of my needs into one. You can choose the color, style and social media platform for sharing. You can place it on either side of the page, at the bottom of the screen or before or after your post. You can choose any combination you want. It provides the analytics of shares, blocks bots and users from adding their own info to your shares and tweets. Has an in editor option to place or hide your icons per post. It also has a click to tweet function. You can set it to include twitter cards with your tweets. It comes with excellent support. The kicker is it is premium but you only pay once.
Enables advanced features and plugins in TinyMCE, the visual editor in WordPress.
Version 4.2.8 | By Andrew Ozz |
This expands your editor to include many more options. It comes with a great column and table function. You should never compose a post in your editor because of revisions but let’s face it, most of us do. This also strips out auto paragraphs which can hinder your post if you are sharing with other bloggers. Ex: linkups and giveaways.
W3 Total Cache
The highest rated and most complete WordPress performance plugin. Dramatically improve the speed and user experience of your site. Add browser, page, object and database caching as well as minify and content delivery network (CDN) to WordPress.
Version 0.9.4.1 | By Frederick Townes |
If you want to use a CDN for better speed this is a good one. Setting it up to get the most out of it is tricky so Google it.
WordPress Zero Spam
Tired of all the useless and bloated WordPress spam plugins? The WordPress Zero Spam plugin makes blocking spam a cinch. Just install, activate and say goodbye to spam. Based on work by David Walsh.
Version 2.0.2 | By Ben Marshall |
As Akismet started to degrade by not catching all spam and returned too many false positives I started using this. You do need to keep an eye on created files as they can get large over time.
WP Bitly can be used to generate shortlinks for your websites posts, pages, and custom post types. Extremely lightweight and easy to set up, give it your Bitly oAuth token and go!
Version 2.3.2 | By Mark Waterous & Chip Bennett |
I don’t like the native URL created by wordpress. I am using this as it works with many other programs (buffer) and it has a spot in the editor showing how many times the url was shared. You can go to their site for detailed analytics.
WP to Buffer
Send WordPress Pages, Posts or Custom Post Types to your Buffer (bufferapp.com) account for scheduled publishing to social networks.
Version 3.0.2 | By WP Cube |
This allows you direct access to your Buffer account to share published and or updated posts. Since it uses buffer the data is transferred from your server only once and is shared to as many accounts you have set up on buffer. I am lazy so I use this plugin.
WPFront Scroll Top
Allows the visitor to easily scroll back to the top of the page.
Version 1.4.5 | By Syam Mohan |
This is another function I added to my theme that broke (twice) when I updated WordPress. I am able to use my brand for the button so I am using it now. The jury is out whether I will keep it but it works well and has a lot of options.
Yoast SEO Premium
The first true all-in-one SEO solution for WordPress, including on-page content analysis, XML sitemaps and much more.
Version 3.1.1 | By Team Yoast |
This is another must have function, SEO. When fully setup this does a great job. I use the premium version as it handles all my redirects and lets me know all crawl errors. I can fix them right from my dashboard. You also get premium support.
I use services outside my host to guarantee my entire database is backed up daily and not just certain files on certain days. I have hack alert as well. Some plugins I add to clean up my database every so often and them remove them when I am not using them. I do this for security reasons. I also use a separate service for blog email for the same reasons.
I hope you enjoyed this list and it gets you thinking about your blog in new ways!
By the way, does anyone have a way to stop typos from being made? 😉
